NEW YORK (AP) — One of the world’s largest and most influential publishers, Simon & Schuster, celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The list tells many stories, through the books selected, not selected, and the evolution of what has been highlighted. “A group of Simon & Schuster staffers took on the daunting challenge of selecting 100 titles from our history that are believed to best represent the breadth and depth of the company’s publishing program, across imprints,” the publisher announced Wednesday. “That book actually had an influence on the course of events.”Like many leading publishers, Simon & Schuster began as an independently owned company and vastly expanded after the 1960s. Along the way, Simon & Schuster acquired numerous other publishers, whose books are now part of the S&S catalog and its centennial list.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to a crowd during a campaign rally on September 25, 2023 in Summerville, South Carolina. A fund intended to pay the legal bills of former president Donald Trump's allies backed chiefly by reported QAnon supporters has spent nearly $400,000, the bulk of which went to a single law firm, new records showed Wednesday. The Patriot Legal Defense Fund received more than $1.5 million between its creation in mid-July and the end of December, according to documents filed with the Internal Revenue Service. Of the total spent by the group, $221,000 went to the firm Brand Woodward Law, mostly in the form of professional and legal fees. Another $150,000 from the fund went to the law firm Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher for the nondescript purpose of "services rendered," the IRS filing shows.

All three major averages posted gains for the third consecutive week, lifted by solid quarterly earnings and positive economic data. Earnings season ramps up next week, with five of the Super Six mega-cap stocks delivering results. Employment numbers are the most important economic data, with Friday's January nonfarm payrolls report carrying the most weight. The January ISM Manufacturing report on Thursday and December's factory orders report Friday are expected to show the sector still in contraction mode. But earnings and commentary this week from peer Sartorious made us encouraged about a return to growth in 2024.

She died of lung cancer in 1978 never having spoken to Capote again. In the fall of 1955, Mrs. Woodward shot and killed her husband at their estate in Oyster Bay, in the middle of the night, believing that he was a burglar. Capote decided it was not, even though someone eventually pleaded guilty to trying to rob the Woodward house on the night of the shooting. In mid-October, just as Capote’s story was set to drop, Mrs. Woodward killed herself in her uptown apartment. While she had had a difficult life and there was no way to know why she did it, many speculated about the correlation.

Advertisement"Ongoing Houthi attacks in the Red Sea are illegal, unacceptable, and profoundly destabilizing," the statement read. Retaliatory strikes against the Houthis would not be unprecedented — the Pentagon did so in 2016 following attacks by the rebels — but they would be escalatory. The Houthis, meanwhile, are not the only Iranian proxy group that has clashed with the US since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war.

The warning came as Yemen’s Houthis vowed retaliation, further raising the prospect of a wider conflict in a region already beset by Israel's war in Gaza. The U.S.-led bombardment came in response to a recent campaign of drone and missile attacks on commercial ships in the vital Red Sea. Since November, the rebels have repeatedly targeted ships in the Red Sea, saying they were avenging Israel's offensive in Gaza against Hamas. The Houthis’ military spokesman, Brig. Tesla, meanwhile, said it would temporarily halt most production at its German factory because of attacks in the Red Sea.

Though aerospace and defense funds understandably haven't done well in this year's faltering market, some individual stocks have posted substantial gains. U.S. support in what's turning out to be a long war in Ukraine will likely push overall contractor spending higher, benefitting aerospace and defense companies. In this era of high-tech warfare, when strategic military engagement is more about digital systems and aerial weapons than boots on the ground, aerospace and defense companies are advantageously positioned. Mr. Erwitt credited “shyness” — he had arrived in New York speaking no English — with making him a photographer. He began seriously taking pictures in Los Angeles with an antique glass-plate camera when he was 16, then upgraded to a Rolleiflex. To keep your enterprise 5G network secure, start by choosing a reputable provider. Whether you use those providers for your enterprise 5G network or build your own private 5G network, it's important to keep things secure. Update regularly, and use multifactor authenticationIt's one thing to build your 5G network securely — it's another challenge to keep it safe. "Ensure all devices connected to the 5G network are regularly updated to patch known vulnerabilities," he said. For that reason, education should be a huge part of keeping your 5G network secure.

Providers sometimes use network slicing to improve the effectiveness of 5G networks. Here, experts advise what to do to deploy network slicing safely and efficiently. That's why 5G network providers are increasingly considering slicing their networks to ensure they serve every client correctly. There's a risk to 5G network slicingExperts have pointed out that every slice in the network can introduce risk. Despite that, the monetization opportunities from network slicing outweigh the potential drawbacks in most circumstances, which means it's likely to become commonplace.

CNN —A former appointee of Donald Trump was sentenced Friday to 70 months in prison for his violent role on January 6, 2021. Federico Klein, a former State Department appointee, was found guilty following a bench trial before Judge Trevor McFadden this summer of multiple counts, including assaulting multiple police officers that day. “Your actions on January 6 were shocking and egregious,” McFadden, also a Trump appointee, said during Friday’s sentencing. Aquilino Gonell told the court that Klein had attacked him multiple times with a police riot shield. Klein’s actions on January 6, Woodward said, were “not a betrayal” of his service in the military and the State Department, but was part of attending “a protest turned wrong.”

Klein, who didn't testify at his trial, declined to address the court before U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden sentenced him to five years and 10 months in prison. Prosecutors said Klein’s participation in the riot was likely motivated by a desire to keep his job as a presidential appointee. Prosecutors had recommended a 10-year prison sentence for Klein, an Alexandria, Virginia, resident who was 42 years old at the time of the riot. Klein and Cappuccio separately attended Trump's “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan. 6 before marching to the Capitol. Approximately 700 of them have been sentenced, with roughly two-thirds receiving terms of imprisonment ranging from three days to 22 years.

There is a general view, in the northern hemisphere especially, of how the game should be played, but Erasmus’ Springboks do not conform to that. Former England coach Clive Woodward said if other teams followed suit, the sport would be "dead within five years". And yet since then, many sides have tapped into what they do well, including England, who took the Springbok copybook on their run to the semi-finals this year and almost stunned South Africa in Paris this past weekend. Erasmus raises the ire of traditionalists but almost always sticks within the confines of the laws. And herein lies the other side of Erasmus, the streetfighter who will not lie down and go quietly into the night.

Two experts in 5G technology and cybersecurity, Rahim Tafazolli and Alan Woodward of the University of Surrey, spoke to Insider about the key steps organizations should take to develop a secure 5G network. Understand your needs and hire the right staffThe first thing to check is whether you need a 5G network, and if so, how you should scope it. Evaluate public versus private 5G optionsIf you don't have the full complement of telecom skills required, it's much safer to rely on those who do to provide you with a secure 5G network. A public 5G network slice from a mobile operator may, in that instance, be better than a private, on-premise 5G network that you have to maintain in-house. Implement monitoring and automationOperating a 5G network requires extensive telecom expertise that many enterprises lack.

Mr. Nauta, who is still employed by Mr. Trump, assured the judge that he understood that in retaining Mr. Woodward, he was waiving his right to appeal a potential conviction on the basis that his defense counsel had a conflict of interest. Mr. Woodward is representing several clients with ties to Mr. Trump and the former president’s supporters. In some cases, Mr. Woodward is being paid through Mr. Trump’s political action committee. Until this summer, one of those clients was an information technology aide at Mar-a-Lago, Mr. Trump’s private club and residence, who is considered a crucial witness in the case. But that disclosure only came to light after Mr. Taveras, facing the possibility of a perjury charge for lying to a grand jury, had fired Mr. Woodward and hired a new lawyer.
